AE: Automatic exposure
AF: Auto focus
ASA: American Standards Association - now ISO
BG: Background
BIF: Bird in flight
Burst: The number of images a camera can take without pausing
CCD: Charged coupled device
DO: Diffractive optics
DOF: Depth of Field - range of sharp focus in a picture
DPI: Dots per square inch
EF: Electronic Focus. Lens mount fitting the entire Canon DSLR system
EF-S : As above but only fitting on a Canon's APS-C sized digital SLRs
EOS (Canon): Electronic optical system
EV: Exposure value
EXIF: Exchangeable image file format (data stored in your image file such as ©)
F-stop: Aperture setting ie. f5.6
GIF: Graphics interchange format
Gimbal: Tripod head that allows movement in all directions (ie. Wimberley)
HTML: Hypertext mark-up language (for Web documents)

IS (Canon lenses): Image Stabilization
ISO: International Standards Organization - digital camera's light-sensitivity
JPEG or JPG: Joint Photographic Experts Group - compressed image file format
L Lenses : Canon's professional lenses
LCD: Liquid crystal display
LED: Light emitting diode
MB: MegaByte
Macro: Extreme close-up photography
MF: Medium format
MP: MegaPixelPPI: Pixels per inch
MP-E : Macro Photo Electronic
POV: Point of view (where the image was taken from)
PDF: Portable Document Format
RGB: Red, green, blue
SLR: Single lens reflex - camera that allows through-the-lens (TTL) viewing
TIFF or TIF: Tagged image file format - uncompressed image file format
TTL: Through the lens (see SLR)
URL: Uniform Resource Locator (Web address)
USM: UltraSonic Motor; Canon's fastest, quietest autofocus lens mechanism
